74, passed away in Honolulu on March 20, 2020 after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Denver Colorado on September 2, 1945. His family moved to Turlock California after his father was released from the Japanese Internment Camp. He received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from UC Berkeley and moved to Hawaii for his master's degree in Information Technology and Computer science in 1974. He worked as a System's Programmer at the University of Hawaii for 28 years. He was an avid competitive cyclist, and well known throughout the cycling community.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Bev Bernal-Masuda; son, Darren Masuda; step-sons, Anson and Aaron Bernal; brother, Michael Masuda; sister, Barbara (Mike) Shapiro and numerous nieces. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Rose Sadako Nakamura

91, of Honolulu, Hawaii, passed away July 10, 2020. She was born July 11, 1928 in Hilo, Hawaii. She taught PE at Hilo High School and at UH Hilo. She worked at the East West Center as a program officer for over 25 years. After retiring from the EWC she co-founded Project Dana in 1989 and served as the founding administrator until she retired in 2017. Her passion was Project Dana and helping the frail and elderly. Rose is survived by daughter Gwen; grandchildren Erin Warner and Drew Nakamura and sister Iris Namaye.

Private services were held. A celebration of life will be held in 2021 at later date for everyone.

Helen Yasuko Sato

86, of Honolulu, passed away on August 3, 2020 in Honolulu. She was born in Honolulu to Shigeo and Miya Soga. She graduated from Punahou School and the University of Hawaii and taught kindergarten at Kainalu Elementary.

She is survived by daughters, Laureen (Edwin) Kuwamoto and JoAnne (Jeff) Sasao of California and grandchildren, Alyssa and Nicholas Kuwamoto, Garrett and Tyler Sasao of California; brothers, Walter and Roy Soga; sister, Jean (James) Kato of California. She was predeceased by husband, James Sato.

84, of Ewa Beach, passed away on July 5, 2020. Born in Okinawa, she was a retired housekeeper for the Ilikai Hotel. Preceded in death by husband, James, she is survived by her sons, Leslie (Tao Feng), Wayne, and Dan Takara; daughters, Lisa (Steven) Van Treese and Lydia (Richard) Takara-Brady; four grandchildren; sisters, Yoko Fujimoto and Harumi (Jimmy) Valenzuela. Private service will held at a later date.

79, of Kailua, an Army veteran and retired pipefitter for the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, passed away on June 24, 2020 at Castle Medical Center. He was born in Wailuku, Maui. He is survived by his wife, June; son, Byron; daughter, Cheryl (Robert) Canali; brother, Stanley (Harriet); and grandchildren, Mira and Mason Canali. Private services were held.

Gladys Sakae Kim

Passed peacefully on August 10, 2020, after celebrating her 97th birthday in July. She was born in Honolulu to Tsurumatsu and Katsuyo Gono, and was preceded in death by her six older siblings.

She will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her sons, Clifford (Elaine) Kim, Nolan (Amy) Kim; her daughter, Roberta (Leroy) Chang; 5 grandchildren; 5 great- grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Interment of her ashes will be held privately, in consideration of the health and safety of her relatives and friends during these times.

Preceded in death by husband, Sadao and sister, Lillian Kaohi, she is survived by her sons, Ken (Val), Blake (Renee), Alan (Lou), and Glenn Nitta; daughters, Sandra (Glenn) Hokama and Wendy Swift; 10 grandchildren; 9 great- grandchildren; brother, Stanley Mori; sisters, Emiko Watanabe, Violet Ogata, and May (Spencer) Chun. Private service held.

Clyde Kazuo Sato

66, of Pearl City, passed away on July 26, 2020. Born in Honolulu, he was a retired maintenance employee for the University of Hawaii. Preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Lily and brother, Allan, he is survived by his wife, Gloria Taira) Sato; sister-in-law, Carol and nephew, Grant. Services are pending.
